Hard Times, High Hopes: Young Adulthood in the Recession Era
Alexandra Smith, Associate Director, Consumer Strategist, Millennials, Iconoculture
Americans under 30 have historically had it pretty easy, coming of age in an era of prosperity, with parents only too happy indulge them—but no longer. The Millennial generation is getting hit just as hard by the economic downturn as other cohorts, in some ways even harder. Saddled with unprecedented debt and facing a hostile job market, recent graduates are facing a rocky path to financial and personal independence. This presentation will examine the hardships facing 20something Americans and the measures they’re taking to stay afloat, as well as some of the silver linings of these economic dark clouds.
We’ll discuss:
- Who these people are: what has shaped their generation and their mindset toward money, career and life?
- Economic realities facing Millennials today
- The shift in mindset and lifestyle: the humbling of entitlement, moving from indulgence to thrift
- The silver lining: how today’s tough times may bring about positive changes moving forward
